City Blues

Gonna Move In To The City gonna paint my toenails blue   (2x)
Gonna show those city slickers what a home-town girl can do

When those big skyscapers come tumbling down on you   (2x)
Then everybody's got a story and you'll never know what's true

If you don't believe in Heaven, don't know what you're gonna do   (2x)
and if you don't believe in Hell then there ain't no place for you

He's got big brown eyes and warm brown skin
He's got plastic money and a big wide grin
He talks that jive so fast and loose
He's like Humphrey Bogart and Mother Goose
And Honey if he ain't with you
Then he must be out with someone new

Everybody in the city's got these lowdown lonesome blues   (2x)
In the city it's so busy that you can't tell whose is whose
Gonna Move..... (repeat 1st verse)

For A While

© 1989 Marcia Guderian,all rights reserved

Come to haunt me a while
 To bewitch and beguile
To fill my heart with daydreams
Stealing so slowly around and below me
 Like dewdrops mixed with sunbeams

What a day to be here with this vision so clear
 Inspiration so near, so near

Don't reach out, do not touch
 Don't risk losing so much
For the minute you say it could chase it away
 For the words are double-dealing

You can come for the ride with no ego or pride
You can set your cares aside
 For A While

( Instrumental Section )

I will come for the ride with no ego or pride
I will set my cares aside
 For A While

Mr. Benefactor

© 1995 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

Mr. Benefactor, won't you market me
Mr. Benefactor, I'm a viable commodity
I know I'm struggling now but if you know how
You could make a star out of me
Oh oh oh Mr. Benefactor won't you put your money on me

I'll sing you sweet songs every night
I'll shine for you, I'll be your light
I'll show up for every gig on time
I'll write you songs that sound just right
With words that fit and hooks that bite
Oh Mr. Benefactor, I'll make it rhyme

Oh Mr. Benefactor, I know you're out there somewhere
Oh Mr. Benefactor, don't you even care?
Don't you know I'm singing my heart out playing my part
at the clubs and the bars and the fair
Oh oh oh Mr. Benefactor won't you meet me there

Mr. Benefactor, won't you market me
Mr. Benefactor, I'm a viable commodity
I know I'm struggling now, but if you know how
You could make a star out of me
Oh oh oh Mr. Benefactor, won't you put your money
Mr. Benefactor, won't you put your money
Mr. Benefactor, won't you put your money on me

It's Not Quite Right

© 2001 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

Chorus:
         And it's not quite right
Like drinking wine from a teacup
         No it's not quite right
Like placing roses in a jar

Have you asked yourself how long
Should you and I go on
When it's not quite right
No it's not quite right

When I try to talk to you
I can never quite get through
'Cause it's not quite right
No it's not quite right

We cannot live together
Still the months have turned to years
And we don't recall the laughter
And we don't forget the tears

( Chorus )

Even back when we began
Perhaps we knew it then
That it was not quite right
No it's not quite right

Now the years have come and gone
And a habit just hangs on
But it's not quite right
No it's not quite right

And every year brings less regard,
Less care and less respect
When I think about my hopes and dreams
It's painful to reflect

( Chorus: That it's not quite right..... )

( Instrumental Section )

If we could take the years that passed
And roll them back right now
Would we then find the courage
To face up to this some how

( Chorus: That it's not quite right..... )

No it's not quite right
It's just the way we are

View From The Middle

© 1989 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

We're looking all the time but no one seems to see
We're working over time to prove that we are free
We hear a little and we let the rest go by
It takes too long to see what doesn't meet the eye
Lost in our own worlds and happy that way
Too bad this old world is going a stray

I am so busy and I know you're busy too
Saving the world would be too much for me or you
Too bad the ones who care are only just a few
When we can see the end we won't know what to do
You make your living and you make your claim to fame
Never believing or accepting the blame

 ( repeat first verse )

I am so busy and I know you're busy too
When we can see the end we won't know what to do
we won't know what to do
we won't know what to do

Time Such a Time

© 1989 M. Guderian, all rights reserved

Time Such a Time, cast adrift floating free
Lying between the lines, hiding out where all can see

 rolling and rolling around
 following wallowing down
 around, turn around

 Up, up and down
 falling over, climbing round
 Life takes its toll
 payment rendered from the soul

riding the waves of the brain
 finding the limits of pain
 arrange, rearrange

 Time.... time..... time.....

Time Such a Time, cast adrift floating free

You Ain't Got Room To Talk

© 1996 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

I'm Tired of hearing from you
 I'd rather be alone
If you don't like what I do
Then go and do your own
I ain't got time to listen
To any more of your jealous criticism
You better go take a walk
'Cause here you ain't got room to talk

Ain't gonna let my heart break
 Just'cause you put me down
If you don't like what I make
 Then why you hanging 'round?
I ain't got time to listen
To any more of your jealous criticism
You better get off your rock
'Cause now you ain't got room to talk

Now what you think just don't matter
Your little brain can be ignored
But if your head gets any fatter
It won't fit out that door
I ain't got time to listen
To any more of your jealous criticism
 You better eat your sock
 Because you ain't got room
No no you ain't got room
Because you ain't got room to talk
I ain't got time to listen
To any more of your jealous criticism

Gentle and Bright

© 1989 M. Guderian, all rights reserved

May your fortune guide you into the light
and never try to hide cruel truth from your sight
never to divide your left from your right
 and may you always know
 and may you always know
 and may your vision show
a future that is Gentle and Bright

When all the world is dark
and filled with despair and doubt
 somewhere there's still a spark
 that hasn't gone out

 so may you always be
 wise in sympathy
 and may you always see
a future that is Gentle and Bright

I'ts Easy

© 1989 M. Guderian, all rights reserved

 And I'ts Easy, I'ts Easy
Here with you it all seems so easy, and easily
you taught my heart to sing this song
No need for right or wrong,
no rules that must apply, don't be shy
Let the soul of your imagination fly, let it fly

And it's more than a love song
Don't dare to hope that nothing can go wrong, but even so,
something inside me seems to know
 My only way to go
 coincides with yours
 And all the doors
are opening before us as we go, as we go

 As we go, love
Dreams and ideas seem to flow, love
Newfound excitement fills each day, love
and the blues just stay away, love

 ( repeat first verse )

They Just Want Your Money

© 1989 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

Well the doctors say "Let's cut you open
And take out that that's interlopin'
And you've seen that on television
 It's something you can self-envision
But They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money

Well step right up and sign right here
And you can take the latest cure
'Cause you never know if you've been sneezin'
You just might have that new disease
and They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money

( Instrumental break )

And if you think insurance can
come up with a better plan
How can it be cheaper when
 they add another middle man?
and They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money

( Instrumental break )

It's funny how big business can
 create the market it demands
And if you'll worry for your health
they will hurry for your wealth
'Cause They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money
 They Just Want Your Money

Knowing All Along

© 1989 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

A memory drifting through my mind
 Undefined
 of Knowing All Along
 that you'd be gone someday
Leaving me behind so far away

 Just a temporary love affair
Guess we both knew it at the start
But somehow in the time we spent together
I let you touch my heart

What's a heart? A muscle in your chest
pulsing life out to the rest
 rhythm of the inner music
That melody, flowing through my mind
 made me blind
 to Knowing All Along
that you'd be gone one day
leaving me alone to find my way

Funny how a place can tie you down
 put you round a bend
Funny how love can turn you upside down again

What is love? A light that's come and gone
 Peace and Joy tagging along
 sparkle of that inner song
That melody singing through my mind
 out of time
 Knowing All Along
 that you'd be gone someday
leaving me to stand in my own way
leaving me to stand in my own way

Me And The Blues

© 2005 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

When the Blues came looking for me this time all that I could do
Was to hide behind my paper and pretend to read the news
But all around the headlines the Blues came peaking through
And in between the lines they helped to cover up the truth
And my eyes filled up with tears and my soul cried out in pain
And then before I knew it we were face to face again

Chorus:
Me And The Blues, it ought-a be a crime
Me And The Blues, I'm crying all the time

Sometimes I sit and wonder why I never do things right
Then the Blues come creeping under and they change my fear to fright
They mask what's up ahead so the background fills my sight
And I fall away from heaven like a wounded bird in flight
And I never used to know that the Blues could be so strong
And I don't know where to go 'cause the Blues go on and on   ( Chorus )

When the Blues come looking for you you can run but you can't hide
You can leave 'em far behind you and then find 'em deep inside
You can put them in their place when you're up to run the race
But like a shadow in the background the Blues are keeping pace
And you better keep on singing or the Blues'll do you wrong
And you just can't keep from swinging with the Blues in every song   ( Chorus )

The Devil Owns The Oil

© 2005 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

Well you may roll down to your church, yes you may fall down on your knees
You may be reborn and speak in tongues and witness and receive
But when you get back in your car again you may not own your soul
'Cause we're all in debt to the Devil 'cause The Devil Owns The Oil

Someone started drilling deep into the ground
and found that black gold bubbling and oozing all around
and turned it into riches and influence and fame
And the Devil, he was laughing as the moth flew toward the flame

And the Devil, he was laughing as the moth flew toward the flame
And it seeped into the water and burned into the skies
It spread poison and destruction all around this earth
And the Devil, he was laughing 'cause he knew what it was worth

Chorus:
Burning in the East, Burning in the West
         Petroleum, petroleum, distillate of death

Now "civilized society" depends upon the oil
Stockholders like vultures waiting for the spoil
And nobody is blameless but no one is to blame
And the Devil is well satisfied. To him it's all the same

Now hellfires burn brightly as the oil wells run dry
And sickness takes the living and the heavens start to cry
The planet is defaced and life is compromised
And the interests of the wealthy triumph over the wise

Now there's so many things to buy for it, So many ways to die for it
And the Devil laughs at all we do as we fight for the last of the poisoned brew

 ( chorus )

 ( repeat first verse )

Yes we're all in debt to the Devil, The Devil Owns The Oil

Contradiction

© 1991 Marcia Guderian, all rights reserved

Oh what contradiction
 My Country Tis Of Thee
To say we fight for peace
or force others to be free
To act like might is what makes right
 and label that "Democracy"
 Oh what contradiction
 My Country Tis Of Thee

 ( repeat )

 And when we let democracy
 get tangled in hypocrisy
Tis then the thought that frightens me
 My Country Tis Of Thee
